It is seen as a kind of coronation ceremony in various Khanqahs. Usually the successor/SajjadaNasheen of the Pir/Mashaykh received the dastaar after pir's wisal. It is done either by the will of the Pir or by the mutual discussions of his disciples.

In Madrasas, Dastar-e-Fazliat is awarded to the Fazil (who completes Fazilat course), Dastar e Nazra to those who complete Nazra (recitation) of holy Quran with proper tajweed and Dastar-e-Hifz to Hafiz (who memorizes the Holy Quran). Many higher Islamic seminaries such as Al-Jamiatul Ashrafiya, Mubarakpur also award "Dastar e Tahqeeq Wa ifta" to their students who completes their specialization in Islamic Jurisprudence and research.
